Beginning Debate
Thanks so much for your interest in the Cherry Creek High School Speech and Debate program!
The Beginning Debate course provides CCHS students with an opportunity to explore various modes of public communication including: debate, oratory, interpretation, and extemporaneous speaking. While students may take Beginning Debate without ever moving on to Advanced Debate classes, the course is a prerequisite for Advanced Debate and for competition.
Please take a moment and fill out the interest form.
It allows us to collect some basic information about those who might be interested in the program. This way we can begin to communicate with future Beginning Debaters about summer reading, what to expect from the course, and how to get prepared and involved!
We would love to know who is interested in getting involved and answer any questions you might have!

There are three academic classes- Beginning Debate, Advanced Debate, and Cross-Examination Debate- that support the CCHS Speech and Debate program. This year, there were ten sections of speech and debate classes.
Students are required to enroll in a class to participate as a member of the team. Advanced Speech and Debate classes require students to compete and participate in team activities.
Beginning Debate is offered to freshmen and sophomores. In Beginning Debate, students will learn about the communication process. Students will study each of the competitive public speaking, interpretation of literature, and debate events that students can compete in during high school. Beginning Debate provides students opportunities to enhance speaking skills, writing skills, research skills and critical thinking skills that will serve them well throughout high school and beyond. Beginning Debate students are members of the team and enjoy numerous opportunities to compete.
Advanced Speech and Debate classes are offered to sophomore, juniors, and seniors. At the end of the year in Beginning Debate, students who continue in the speech and debate program will choose an area of competition to focus on and enroll in the proper advanced course with teacher approval. The teachers and coaches will assist students in selecting their focal competition event.
